Arnd Gatermann   Grafik | Design

Home page

As a graphic artist, I gave free rein to my ideas from a very early age. My art teacher at grammar school told me at the time "You can rightly call yourself an artist." I never made use of this, because not everything you design is art. I prefer to be a "freelance designer" and do what I enjoy. Some of my graphic works have also been called art - often the ones I wouldn't have expected. You can see an overview of my work on Instagram: @arnd.gatermann

Incidentally, a virtually framed photo of things that I photographed before throwing them away got the most likes on Instagram - in connection with the question "Is this art or can it go?"

As a designer, I design and build things that are not available to buy as I imagine them. Filigree lights, a thermo saw with a low-lying work surface, foldable scales and a backpack trolley with quiet wheels and a handlebar. The trolley with two rucksacks on top of each other is guided sideways and therefore doesn't bump into your heels. Steered with one hand, you can even run quickly to the train. I don't market my products, but I have registered the idea for some of them with the patent office.

As an architect, I mainly worked as a creative designer. As my creativity and my experience in building and planning law were in great demand and were rewarded accordingly, I could afford to end my career a few years earlier than usual. I mostly planned inner-city properties that had previously been developed for other uses, such as steelworks, colliery sites and breweries. The new development plans to be created were then tailored to my design together with the planning authorities. I accompanied this process with a team of specialist planners and did persuasive work through public presentations at public participation events, in the planning committee and in the city council, which ultimately decided that the plans could be realised.
